HAPPY JEFFUARY (2009 EDITION)!

NEWARK, NJ - JANUARY 30: Patrik Elias #26, Andy Greene #6, and Johnny Oduya #29 of the New Jersey Devils take the ice to warm up before playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Prudential Center on January 30, 2009 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)JEFFUARY is upon us once again! Though it will still be all about me for the next 28 days, it's going to be hard to top 2008 when the Giants became SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS in the GREATEST SUPER BOWL EVER. (Quick notes about this year's game: no, it wasn't a great game until the thrilling 4th quarter, which ended with a questionable TD call and miserable non-replayed finish.)

So what's in store for this JEFFUARY? I'm glad you asked! I've already bought myself a new watch (a rather large Invicta that you could kill a small rodent with) and went skiing (my thighs are burning right now). On the list for the rest of the month: dinner at Wasabi or Lanterna (or both!), a beer night at Ginger Man, watching hockey (and possibly attending a game), drinking, skating, watching golf, getting a massage, drinking, eating chocolate, playing with my PS3, drinking, picking up new golf shoes (for my upcoming March trip to Florida), watching LOST, and much much more. And as you might have noticed, there will be drinking. And though it's only flurrying right now, I've got my fingers crossed that there will be a major blizzard in the next 4 weeks.

But the latest and greatest JEFFUARY news is that I will be getting an HD DVR tomorrow. (Because let's face it, I'm not lazy enough and don't watch enough TV.) I thought about getting a TiVo HD, but it's just not cost-effective (between the cost of the box, the monthly fees for the subscription and CableCards, plus the cable company makes you pay for installation). Besides, I've played around with this box at my sister's house and it's sufficient for what I want it for, to record shows while I'm busy drinking. And at only $10 a month it's the best choice.

If there are any other gifts that you feel I might appreciate, or drinks you wish to buy me, do not hesitate to send them my way.

HAPPY JEFFUARY EVERYBODY!

UPDATE: On a related note, Jeffuary 11th will be set aside for KRISUARY this year, so mark your calendars. This holiday can be celebrated the same way you would any other day in Jeffuary: by drinking.
Enjoy!

'ARRESTED' MOVIE IN DEVELOPMENT?

No sooner did I post the pilot of Arrested Development to kick off Jeffuary did this little news tidbit arrive: Jeffrey Tambor said on XM Radio's Ron & Fez Show that plans for an AD movie are in the works. Jason Bateman is also very interested, and producers Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard are attempting to round of the rest of the show's cast members. They already have an idea for the storyline, which is the first good reason I've heard yet to end the writers' strike.

If past performance is an indication of future results, it will garner a 92% Tomatometer rating from critics while making $92,000 at the box office. But with the state of comedy movies today (Meet The Spartans, Norbit, Adam Sandler steadfastly refusing to retire), this is refreshing news and obviously incredible news for the fans of the show like me. And since all three seasons are on DVD, you have no excuse not to catch up. (I really want Season Three for my birthday.)

CAN JEFFUARY GET ANY BETTER? I HUMBLY SUBMIT THAT IT CANNOT!

HAPPY JEFFUARY!

Yes, it's that magical month again.

There's really only one thing you have to remember about the month of JEFFUARY: every day is about me. Yeah sure, I know some people celebrate Valentine's Day by buying their significant other candy, and even though they pretend to be delighted they file away their anger towards you for getting them a gift that is designed to make them fat. Bravo! Good luck with that. Meanwhile, I'm taking the day off and will be at the bar.

So for the entire month of JEFFUARY, I'm going to treat myself to something every day (and I encourage you to do the same). These activities may include any or all of the following: drinking, fine dining, watching hockey, drinking, playing open hockey/pond hockey, drinking, skiing, bourbon, going to/renting a movie, playing video games, drinking, getting a massage, drinking, watching golf, watching LOST, drinking. Did I mention that there might be drinking involved? Only 28 days hath JEFFUARY so I'd better get started. You can kick off the festivities by buying ME a drink. See how it works? You too can be a part of the unbridled joy that is JEFFUARY!

It's really just all about the fun: me having fun, and you doing everything to facilitate me having fun.

HAPPY JEFFUARY EVERYONE!

HAPPY JEFFUARY!

During this magical month, I'm going to try to blog every day. That's right, every ding dong day in Jeffuary, you'll get some new useless crap in this space! This, of course, means that the postings up here will be of substandard quality, but hey, you get what you pay for. Oh, and since I'll be in sunny Florida from Feb 14th until the 22nd, it'll be hard to update, so maybe I'll email a joke/pun/palindrome, or maybe an advertisement for butt cream. Whatever it may be, it's sure to be fabulous.

Have a happy healthy Jeffuary!

(Oh, and don't buy those Valentine KitKat minis, they're this weird cherry flavor and they're all pink and sissy looking.)

HIGH JEFFINITION IS FINALLY HERE

Well, a mere 11 months and 6 days since this whole thing was started, HighJeffinition is finally here! As you may or may not know, I bought the Sharp 32" widescreen LCD TV on January 7th, and although DVDs look great on it, I have been patiently waiting for some sort of HD broadcast signal to really test it out.

The bottom line: it was worth the wait.

I got the C*vision HD box yesterday, and watched a few shows in HD last night, and it looked fantastic. It's a whole different world, especially when you compare it to the SD analog channels (2-99), which look positively horrible by comparison (note: they shouldn't be allowed to call it "digital cable" since less than half of the channels are actually digital). What I didn't expect is that some shows were actually FUNNIER in HD as well, like "The Office" and "My Name Is Earl". Heck, even Jay Leno was funny last night--wait, that's crazy talk, it was probably because Albert "Hank Scorpio" Brooks was on. (The clear picture only makes you realize how garishly ugly the "Tonight Show" set is, though.)

I can't give you a "full" review because the idiots at C*vision only gave me access to the local HD channels for some reason, and none of the "digital cable" channels or the HD sports channels (the latter will be the true test, especially watching hockey in widescreen splendor). At least this weekend there are a couple of football games on local TV, and hopefully this will get this worked out in time for "The Sopranos" and the Olympics in HD, coming soon to a home theater near me.

So it looks like I'm going to host a party on Xtra-Large Game Sunday (name changed so I don't get sued), on Jeffuary 5th, 2006!!! This time, my TV will NOT have a knob.

It's an entirely different kind of watching, altogether.
