KICKING OFF AUGHT SIX!

It's finally here, the biggest day for the BCS, and I'm not talking about the British Cardiac Society! It's the NCAA Division I-A Men's Football Bowl Championship Series National Championship at the Rose Bowl, an epic matchup featuring two explosive undefeated teams, USC vs. Texas . . . and I can't stay up to watch it because it's on a Wednesday! The whole BCS bowl thing is an abortion. The NCAA plays every single one of their regular season football games on Saturday, yet the bowl games are all over the freaking map. And they drag these stupid games out, so it will probably end at infinity in the morning.

In simpler times, all of the bowl games were shown on January 1st, which would have worked out perfectly for me (and others who had the 2nd off), since I wasn't really doing anything besides fighting off a hangover. But this year we had two BCS bowls (Cotton, Fiesta) on January 2nd, the Orange Bowl last night, and now the Rose Bowl. Seriously, by the time I get to the end of the bowl season (which started around Halloween), I'm exhausted. And at the end of all this nonsense, there's no guarantee that we'll declare a unanimous champion! That's right, it's just as pathetic as boxing, only it's a sport people actually still care about. All they'd need is one more game, a final pitting the #1 vs. #4 and #2 vs. #3 winners, and it would be solved (instead, they're adding a fifth bowl for the lesser teams, which is pointless and doesn't solve the problem). But we're stuck with this, since the current system is prolonged by those fatcats who want to keep raking in their Bowl bucks, thus killing any chance of there being a clear cut winner in the final game every year. And furthermore, why does every freaking game need a halftime concert? Just go take a piss, get another beer, and sit back down because they're kicking off!!!

Anyway, I can't be more excited to get a good night's sleep and find out the score tomorrow.

Circuit City is proud to announce their "Inventory Blowout!" So wouldn't you think that would mean "lower prices"? Well, guess again, smart shopper! Because the LCD TV that I've been planning on purchasing actually INCREASED in price since Jan. 1st. So I guess it just means, "We're getting rid of our inventory, whether or not we actually sell anything!"

In case you were wondering, I stayed up to watch it. I'm glad I did.

Vince Young. What an amazing performance by the Longhorn QB. Vertullo told me earlier in the season to look out for this guy, and he was right. He single-handedly shredded the porous USC D last night, with 30-40-267 passing, and 20-201-3 TD rushing. Do the math: that's 468 yards ALL FROM ONE GUY. And when he ran for the winning touchdown in the final seconds (4th and 5, 0:19) they didn't even get a HAND on him. I was also impressed with his accurate passing, as guys who can run this well usually suffer in that area. There's no way to know if he'll succeed against the bigger, badder, faster, blitziphilic NFL players (of course, he'll probably end up on the Saints or something, but hopefully not end up the next Aaron Brooks), but he showed everyone what he's capable of last night, and I don't think it would be hyperbole to say "one for the ages".

Reggie Bush. The RB showed signs of brilliance, but looked befuddled all night, like he was trying to live up to the hype and bust the big play instead of just playing the game. Everyone will point to the run that he broke in the 1st, only to attempt a lateral to an unknowing teammate and fumble it away. But this sums it up for me: after a few runs, his shoes had to be taped onto his feet, because his new "Super Bad" Nike shoes kept falling off. Next time, try to get your priorities straight. Oh wait, there IS no next time.

Matt Leinart. I bet the 5th year senior is now wishing he went into the NFL draft last year, where he would have been a no-brainer #1 pick, but now who knows? Maybe he should have retired after the Notre Dame game, when his stock was high.

Sloppy first half. Fumbles, laterals, missed FGs/XPs. What do you mean, it's been 30 days since these guys played a game? You could hardly tell! Anyway, that's way too much time to be off the field. But they certainly picked it up in the second half.

The commentators. Keith Jackson: love the guy and his classic college football voice, but I think he has to retire (again?). Thankfully, Dan Fouts was there to pick up the slack, but Jackson stumbled frequently and was way behind the action all night. "He lost the ball!" (Dan: "No, it was a lateral.") "It's incomplete." (no, it was an interception.) And on an unsuccessful 4th-and-inches running attempt for USC, he exclaimed "He got it!" (when it was pretty clear that he was stopped short), and then 10 seconds later mumbled, "I meant Bush got the ball, not the 1st down." He even said after a blown call, "Well, I'm looking at it through binoculars". That's no excuse, I just think the game's moving too fast for him. It was also pretty jarring and unnecessary for Fouts to make an allusion to Harry Potter by saying, "This is like a game of Quiddich for Young! Where's his broom? He's got the Snitch!" Was he trying to reach out to the under 13 demo, or was that a shout out to his teenage kids? Either way, it was creepy. The interplay between Dan and Keith (who was dusting off phrases like "he was beyond the pale") was pretty shaky.

The officials. They must study tape of the NFL referees, because we saw it all last night: reviews on almost every play, at least three blown calls (one on a Young lateral for a TD, where they showed his knee was clearly on the turf), standing around looking at each other afraid to make a call on the field (when Bush catapulted into the end zone for a TD in the second half). These refs are ready for the big time!

Final tally. Although the first half was a train wreck, overall it was a classic game, and with Texas down 38-26 with 6:38 left I really thought it was all but over. Apparently, no one told Vince Young.

All told, it was bowltastic!
